Event Navigation

Due to precautionary measures, there has been a change of plans for this Saturday’s In-Person Learn Along that was meant to be at the Arts Center in Sechelt. We are taking this event ONLINE. This will be our first, and our topic has expanded! This will provide the no-cost opportunity for all of you to take part if you feel so inclined to connect from behind your screen, in the comfort of your own home. The Zoom link for this even has been sent to members of the Sunshine Coast Fibreshed. If you did not receive the link or need assistance, please email us.

Danielle Stephens has kindly offered to coach us through the following projects, utilizing easy-to-access materials:

Part 1: Building a Simple Drop Spindle. (2 styles. You are welcome to join the group to make one, both, or neither!). Supplies are listed below:

Type 1: The CD Spindle (This spindle will be useable immediately).
1 wooden dowel, 3/8″ wide, 12″ long
(a piece of medium grit sandpaper if the dowel is not beautifully smooth)
2 CDs you’re never going to listen to again
1 “O” ring, 3/8″ (from the plumbing section of the hardware store)
1 rubber grommet, inside 3/8″/outside 5/8″
1 cup hook, 1/2″ or 3/4″
1 piece of yarn, ~24″ long

Type 2: The Air Dry Clay Spindle (This spindle needs to dry for 24 hours).
1 wooden dowel, 3/8″ wide, 12″ long
(a piece of medium grit sandpaper if the dowel is not beautifully smooth)
1 cup hook, 1/2″ or 3/4″
1 package of air dry modelling clay, any colour (in craft section or Crayola stationery section of dollar and toy stores)
1 piece of yarn, ~24″ long

Part 2: Creating Yarn on Your Drop Spindle. You will need a Drop Spindle and smoothly carded or combed roving, available at Sew Easy if you do not have your own. Fibreshed has several Drop Spindles for loan.

This Learn Along is open to all Fibreshed members. If you are already a Drop Spindler, please join the group to share your experiences and try your hand at building a quick and easy spindle. You are also welcome to join the group for just the parts you are interested in. There is no fee for this online Learn Along.
